Thawing Frozen Piping

  • If you know what fixture the pipe goes to, turn on the faucet. (once thawed, leave faucet dripping)
  • If the pipe is in a cabinet/cupboard, open the doors.
  • Turn up the heat in the area near the frozen pipe to 70-75 degrees.
  • Use a hair-dryer or space heater to apply heat to the immediate frozen area if accessible (under lavatory sinks, in crawl-space, etc.).
  • Make sure your crawl-space is sealed properly against wind and cold weather.
  • Monitor the areas you place space heaters in frequently.
  • Never use an open flame to heat/thaw a pipe.
  • Wirsbo PEX tubing is designed to expand with the weather conditions, although it may freeze, it should not burst. (We cannot 100% guarantee this, please monitor this piping like you would any other piping).
  • If a frozen pipe thaws out and breaks/splits, shut off the valve for that pipe and call for service to repair the pipe.
  • If you must leave your home while it is frozen, shut the water off at the main valve for your home. Turn it back on when you return and check for leaks at that time.

    Power Outage - No Heat

Boilers require electricity to function. If you do not have heat, we recommend using an alternate heat source such as a space heater or gas fireplace. Be sure to monitor radiators and baseboard heat piping as you would any other plumbing during the time your heating system is not functioning as these pipes can also freeze. If you will be without electricity for an extended period of time, we recommend obtaining a generator and having an electrician wire your boiler to it to restore heat to your home. If your heat is not working and you need to leave your home for an extended period, we recommend having your heating system drained and blown out with compressed air to help guard against freezing. Always have a friend, family member or neighbor monitor your home during absences or vacations, as a burst pipe can cause significant and costly damage to your home.
